ZIZKOV COMMUNITY CENTER

Located in the heart of Zizkov in Prague III in the Czech Republic, the Zizkov Community Center seeks to give back to a neighborhood deeply rooted in the history of Prague. During the era of the Soviet Union, there was a severe lack of public spaces for congregation or recreation, and this lack of space continues into the present day. The aim of this project was to create an urban infill project that would work to bring a sense of trust and community back to a neighborhood in Prague that needs it. In the future, this project could ideally spread to other neighborhoods in Prague and eventually the rest of the Czech Republic.

The form focuses heavily on multi-story integration, and open concept. This is a space for people to do whatever they want, and have a space that is adaptive to their uses. Opening the ground floor, and raising the rest of the program up and digging down a level under the surface allows for a massive space for a plethora of activities, right off of the street. Verticality and dimensional spaces are emphasized with multi-height spaces, staggered floors, skylights that reach down to the ground floor, and multiple stairwells that act both as a form of transportation and destination. The space has enough versatility to be converted for different activities, both public and private, and also features a rooftop deck with views out to the rest of the neighborhood.
