MONASTERY
The Monastery is a proposal from my sophomore year, for a space dedicated to twenty people and their day to day lives. Taking the traditional purpose of a monastery, I chose to flip the use to focus around music, as civilizations have connected through music and sound since the beginning. The layout of the campus is arranged in a way that mimics sheet music, creating a precession or choreographed movement throughout the spaces for the user's day to day. Within the campus, there are living spaces, bath houses, a common food hall, a music library, a recording studio and a common congregation/performance hall. These are situated along a grid in a way as to create a sense of movement in plan, forcing the user to be intentional about their path from day to day. The composition is achieved through large masses imbedded into the ground, with an elevated bridge guiding people along their path, while allowing views out towards the surrounding landscape.
