DURHAM DRIVE IN
The Durham Drive In, is a response to a prompt to create a hybrid pedestrian/drive in theater in one of the rear parking lots of Streets at Southpoint in Durham, NC. There was to be a total of five screens, with three being dedicated to car traffic and two being used for pedestrians. The repurposing of this parking lot was an exercise in adaptability, as this space is often empty until around holiday season. To address this problem, I chose a more theoretical and sculptural approach, with a lifted platform acting as both a pavilion space during the day, and a traversable platform during prime viewing hours in the evenings. The form is a sprawling set of ramps and walkable paths, for pedestrians to be able to get different views or get to other screens without having to park, all while dividing up the spaces for vehicular traffic. The screens are situated in a way that doesn't allow for overlap, with a central projector and concessions booth being configured around the middle of the lot. The seating for the pedestrian theaters works similarly to an indoor theater, with tiered seating and a private projection booth at the top of each structure. Along with this, there is access to these booths from both the ground level, as well as the raised ramp portions of the structure.
