WILSON ART CENTER (COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WITH BEN STRADLING)
Working together with a fellow classmate, Ben Stradling, the Wilson Art Center acts as a community hub in the heart of downtown Wilson, North Carolina. Located adjacent to the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, the center contains multiple spaces tailored to artists, performers, craftsmen and pedestrians simply passing through. The building contains a central stairwell that is the main vehicle for circulation through the spaces, acting as it's own destination, and bringing a sense of connectivity through the floors. This stairwell is contained in the glass atrium, that allows light to flood into the space, as well as being a cut-through to the other street, calling back to the plethora of alleys located in downtown Wilson. The dynamic screen along the exterior of the project acts as a privacy barrier, while still allowing views out and light in, being constructed of various wood and metal panels in a tectonic manner, similarly to the Whirligigs in the park across the street.
